Tiffany Fox I first heard Manuskript purely by chance in Resurrection Records, Camden, London, when I lived in the UK, and was hooked from that moment. This is a great compilation of the history of their style and sound! Favorite track: No Reprise.

1.
Ask another loaded question, just to toy with my emotions. They're impossible to understand and so difficult to feel. The things you never gave me, the life you never saved for me. A scar that takes a hundred years to heal. Ordinary days have changed so much that I'm amazed to hear you pleading for assurances, as your secret is revealed. With heavy hearts still beating, enlightened minds are meeting at the point of no return, I am revealed. I'll surprise her, be a little colder. I'm no wiser, I'm just older. “It ain't over 'til it's over!” Gotta get my closure, show some composure. And that's why I follow your eyes. I'm watching them roll. I’m feeding you lies. You swallow them whole. I follow your eyes, I'm touching your soul. I’m feeding you lies, you swallow them whole. If I outlive you, I may forgive you. Because in the future, I'm gonna be stronger. I'll be seductive, not self destructive. Nor apprehensive of charm offensives.

Dressed for cocktails underwater, Feeding on our famed rapport. Drawing breath and dragging under. Cut the chord that led before. Tighten once but thrown asunder, Tell me not, I’ll hear no more. To choose between our tempting fates, The safe and sure and underclass. And all we fear is here to take, when all we know will never last. Red for danger, green for envy. With faces like I told you so. Hoping no and thinking maybe Time to switch? Your life ‘to go’. Titans all, but giants? Never! Replicants can be assured. Secluded by our tempting fate, the safe and sure and underclass. When all we fear is here to take. When all we know will never last. Breaking with decorum, once I call you. I’m calling my shots out. Digging in as if we own you The feelings won’t last longer All is said and done before you, so please don’t ask me now The subtle art of knowing not to, knowing when to, knowing how. Running under wheels. Dancing on the runway. Flying to the sun. Semaphore in thunderstorms.

Knives 04:59
A prisoner of the cheap champagne but I was faithful to the last. And passionate to the bitter end but now I fear I’m fading fast. In the years that I have loved you, they’ve been waiting for the downfall. An expectant crowd is gathering and sharpening their knives. Now I know I’ve never kept you, in the style that you're accustomed. So I’m playing devil’s advocate and spoiling for a fight. Now the stakes are doubling, I can no longer let it ride. In the years that I have loved you, They’ve been waiting for the downfall. Now I know I’ve never kept you, in the style that your accustomed An expectant crowd is gathering and sharpening their knives. We’ve locked into a vision, built on guilt and superstition. When it would have been much easier to smile. It’s time that everyone took sides. Take this moment to explode the myth and let your taste decide It didn’t take a genius to infiltrate your lives So now I draw the final curtain, say goodbye. So I’ll make the noble gesture and bring an end to this campaign. Because the fear of being frozen out, is all too much, for the prisoner of the cheap champagne.

Hiding in your listings, I'll have you live in mine. Dismiss me with a checkbox or hire me with a sign. A footnote for tomorrow but to the future climb. So you will be my icon and i your waste of time. Now that we all follow you, there's nowhere left to hide I wanna be there when you're fighting, be there when you're climbing. Higher and higher tonight. I wanna be there when your fighting, be there when you're flying. Higher and higher tonight. A grace and favour table, a title to decline. So you prescribe our treatment, or you call out the time. Upon a painted empire, through stages of our lives So you direct our movement and we can keep in line If I was the stronger, I'd push the pile of chairs beneath you. If I was the wiser, I'd read between the lines you're writing. If I was faster, I'd run to where could't touch me. If I was the braver, I'd face the fall from grace and favour. Now that we all copy you, resentment rides on every action. Now that we all envy you, you're falling on your pride Now that we're all watching you, there’s nothing that we cannot see through.

Wake Up Call 03:45
Sleep, it melts the world away. It smothers actuality, releasing us from yesterday. So keep me in suspended animation. Unaware that I’m just seconds from this morning’s nightmare. Believe in your Utopia, ’til the room invades your mind. Forsake the only sanctuary, you’ll ever hope to find. Good morning, this is your wake-up call. Arise! This is your wake-up call. No warnings, this is your wake-up call. Forget the lucid dreams and new horizons and get ready for the 9 to 5. Routine, making history was never our concern. Our deities deceive us and at once, the pain returns. I try to focus but it hurts to much to say. Crash down to earth but still my dreams will ricochet. Striking the time and thinking back, I’m falling prey. Breaking the dawn within these walls. My modern nightmare calls.
7.
Faceless 05:02
I don’t see you like i used to but i know that you see me. Without question, without reason. A vital decision is lost in the system. The experiment is failing. Eliciting responses, as you’re tearing from the page The silent voices of stolen faces. Unholy icons to arrange. The bodycount will rise as they fall. My hopes and dreams, have they gone to the wall? Turn, embrace them, reach inside them. The restless and the faceless are with you every day and night. I long to feel the way we used to be. Down beneath the surface, are you with me? We stand as one, the process has begun. In this nation of hidden treason, the innovation of false emotion. Duty bound, as we answer the call. Events elected, friends rejected. Down beneath the surface, are you with me? Have you conceded this experiment has failed? You’re holding out for something else but your requirements are surplus. All those words and empty gestures? Less than worthless.

ocked away in the highest tower, who can save the lady in her darkest hour? It’s you! The Prince of Fools, you’ve been waiting for this moment, there's a job to do. The purest heart must seize the day. Put an end to the villain and his wicked ways. Don’t you know that bad guys always win? And there’s one too many heroes, in a world that's full of heroines. Just how much pain can a man endure? He's never felt it's like before. But to win the hand of the lady fair, lead an army of lovers to the dragon's lair. Perform the tasks of Hercules, to bring that monster to his knees. The empire falls, the dream will too. Because she won't be riding home with you. A maiden’s pride won’t need defending, if I’ve got no time for happy endings. Don’t you know that bad guys always win? He's setting such a good example, as he sets the world to rights. But Peter Perfect isn’t worth his price. He doesn’t cut the ice.

Lima 03:59
The most natural thing in the world. When the pretty-boy meets the glamour-girl. The most natural thing in the world. The diversity of life. Seduction, man’s only nemesis. He became a pioneer marking out his territories. It’s native, it’s primitive. So don’t go pinning all your hopes on evolution. Silently, pads the leopardess. In imitation ocelot, dressed to excess. Eager to impress this predator. He’s drawing nearer but she’s just waiting for the chance to show him “wild”. He found her, she was easy to track down. And he guides her onto neutral ground. He stands astride her. The whole of Lima’s watching him today but she laced him with Peruvian and took his prize away. The most natural thing in the world. Native and primitive, it’s the diversity of life.
10.
Lost at Sea 04:15
Smile while the sun shines. Find my brave new words. Minding my language, Serving a sentence I'll repay. Time waits for no man. Should I stay? You couldn't say. These tears of laughter may turn a different tide. Lie back and languish each fleeting moment I'm denied, time laps the shores of every night. I shouldn't cry. It was all that I could hope to take, a secret once a fact remains. For every truth I can’t escape, I think I gave too much away now. Sold down the river, lost at sea. You and I, a memory? Watching this unfold. Turn the tricks over in your hand. Know when all is told. Wanted no further part in this. Reaching ever out. Leaving your mark upon my life. Only wanting more, hoping. Hoping against all hope now. I’m everything you've pushed aside. A secret that the facts can't hide. Now the sun has set upon a lie. I know I gave too much away tonight.
11.
A stolen moment, you draw me over, I want to touch you with my body. In my mind, my thoughts are racing. Will we ever see the fallout from the truth? Or dare to leave our quiet lives behind? So I'm taking my time. When time's the only thing I've got on my side. Release your hand and tell another white lie. Straighten your hair and as we move into sight Our different world awaits, I feel the divide. Hiding my feelings to protect and survive. You seem to falter as I look into your eyes. Too many rumours here, too many to fight? Take me to a different place, where can be alive. Hanging our heads, turning our backs. To protect and survive. Spending every night in hiding, I've no-one to confide in, if I'm lonely and I'm frightened and for you, it's just the same. Are we safe here in the shadows? Do you think they see us growing day by day? Or can they hear my heart when it's beating out your name? As we kiss our goodbyes, Should I dare to dream? Believe you could be mine? I raise a glass when I can barely raise a smile Now you're a part of me, you've felt me inside. Take me in your arms my love and we can come alive. Until that day, do what it takes. To protect and survive.
12.
No Reprise 04:21
Were they marching through? Turning back to you in search of shelter. Lead them into war. Cut them down before they can be heroes. Though the cause is true, cannot quite break though this side of Winter. World awaits the thaw Melt the ground before they can be buried. Steal this crown, ripping it down. Calling to arms, we make no sound. Duty bound, all that we've found. Lost in it all and gone to ground. This disguise, dripping with lies. Chilled to the bone and paralysed. No reprise, a word to the wise. Bury your dead and dry your eyes. They await the news. Shining blackout, views and propaganda. The cavalry came through? Cut their lives in two with tempered steel. So if we could summarise If the cause had meaning. Well it felt like something other than we were feeling. And it seemed like sometimes, she was there defending. Well then we could counter all these times and we'd stop pretending. We cannot move around you (or so it seems to be). Have we lost our sense of irony, in words we cannot mend? A war without an order, towards some secret end. And we question nothing further and we question nothing.
13.
Chase 04:32
I’ve given up this chase, I’ve said my not-so-fond farewells. To reach out and touch someone, we can fall into each other’s arms. Well you can tie me up, you can tie my hands but please don’t tie me down. Sure, I need the exercise but you’re giving me such a runaround, in this chase. Forget all the values and virtues and how-do-you-do’s, please and thank-you’s. Get it all into perspective, then we’ll see who’s self-destructive. Soon you’ll find that everything has taken shape. From my side of the mirror, your side looks such a sorry state. I’m gonna make a meal of it. Now I’ve got the feel for it. Did I tell you that practice makes perfect? Have you got the taste for it? There’s no time to waste for it. So, let’s chase a little bit. Seeing what you want to see, give it up for me. And then I’m going to love you and leave you. So if you’ve got the taste for it, there’s no time to waste for it. So, let’s chase a little bit.
14.
Natural High 04:37
I've got a complex. Is this a saga that will run and run? You are a simple fix. The risk is undeniable but such a lot of fun. You’re an endorphin, my cure and my addiction, they appear as one and I must brace myself because they say the best is yet to come. So I try to withdraw and I try to ignore but my senses are quickening and I won't see. Because I’m easily led, Because there is no “instead” A nervous ending awaits me. All that I crave is your natural high. Spending all I save, for your natural high. I've become a slave to sensation and frustration. It’s your aim and you aim to be so natural. I've got a death wish and I'm stricken until I can find a winning formula. To give me confidence and attitude, to take it in my stride. I'm doing anything to try and fill the vacuum that you've left behind. I’d sell a million… If I could bottle the feeling deep inside.
15.
Espresso 03:39
Cutting a figure, the excesses removed. A polished performer, stirring her espresso. Scratching the surface, wait or the collapse. Debating her virtues and disclosing the facts. The dossier is water-tight, presented in a softer light. Her alibi has evidently closed the file on me. My understated overtures, always met with open arms. Inhibited and cautious. Mark my record with a lipstick mark. Never really worked out how. Couldn’t really fail, to bring it to fruition. Like it or not, we’re down, I appeal for a re-trial. Another little flame extinguished. Putting up a fight, so call another witness. Moving in from the aisle to the stands, I play to the crowd. During the cold snap, she's under the microscope. Behind a two-way mirror, there’s always hope. My understated overtures, always met with open arms. Inhibited and cautious. Mark my record with a lipstick mark. A polished performer, she plays to the crowd. Your witness, she plays to the crowd.
16.
Number 17, for a porcelain complexion. To create the right impression, in this adolescent dream. A ready-made cliché, just add Stolichnaya. With a hint of paranoia now, cos nothing's as it seems. Dim the lights and I’ll avert my eyes. Dim the lights and I’ll give you such a fright! A pocket full of dust, will see me through to midnight. I've been practicing my incantations and I know which shapes to throw. So come my liquid sister, I pay homage to your purity. It’s just your mind I’m after but let's see how far you'll go.
17.
This enigma has always been eccentric. Wanted to be noticed but never understood. Everything I taught myself was wrong. Protecting the image I’m projecting. Behind the line that can't be crossed, lies the innocence I’ve lost. Everything is going for a song and everything I taught myself was wrong. So now for your pleasure, I’m out in the open. Seduced and abandoned, now my guru's gone. I’m making the end game, with a chink in my armour. Now I’m taking the death throes alone. My guru's gone. Awkward. I’m facing a dilemma. Is it time for re-invention? Is it time to move along? Decisions? I’ll let them make them for me. Contradictions? How could I let this happen? Cursing and now the chase is over, I didn’t count the cost. Once more for your pleasure, I’m out in the open. Seduced and abandoned, now my guru’s gone.
18.
If I had a plan you'd be the provider of my time. The press of a switch and I'm floating, aimless on my own side. The places we choose to regret, every moment of our lives If I looked as good I wouldn't be here, crossing this divide Take us deep inside analogue hearts with digital minds. If I had the chance, I'd be the decider of your fate. A design to confine you. Moving freely in my own space. Freezing out, shutting down the conventional wisdom which dictates. In the flesh, in the light of the day, in the open. A risk I never take. Take me to you, we're all lies in digital. We'll all lie again.
